23. Hummingbird. This bird (measuring only 5 to 10 cm) is a true artist. With its wings it beats on average 50 times per second, but also 80 beats per second is possible. This allows the little creature to stand still in the air, so that it can suck up the nectar from flowers at a great height. But flying straight up, straight down and backwards is also possible. During diving flights it can reach a speed of 79 km per hour. When decelerating, it can develop a force equal to 9 times its own weight.
